Why do we need to change the way we work and live in the social sectors? The current approach is not solving the issues we need fixed in the world today. While there is a massive social sector in the world today (up to 30% of the global economy including government) many of the issues that the sector seeks to solve still exist. Yes these problems (poverty, economic evolution around globalization, disaster vulnerability, war, forced migration) are tough challenges. Yet we know that social sector workers are performing at lower capacity. Better tactics, strategies and mindset are the key to better addressing these issues. We create better social sector workers, and thereby increase the leverage of these organizations first by transforming the workers themselves. I believe that the people that form social sector organizations are the key to transforming the sector and revolutionizing impact on social issues in the world. This leads to lack of tranquility and lower personal and output impact. Changing a system requires changing the habits, strategies and mindset of the people running the system. We need to change the way we work in the social sectors. This means taking the focus away from our organizational systems and taking a close look at ourselves. We are the original engine of any social change that emanates outward into the areas that we with to impact. If there is no internal change, no external change is possible. I’m not expecting my fellow Social Sector Titans to instantly become Nelson Mandela combined with Muhammad Yunus (Grameen Bank founder) but I am expecting us to take a clear eyed look at our habits, routines, and strategies. We need to revisit the states of mind/body that we adopt for work and adjust the stories that we tell ourselves and others about our endeavors. The ripple effects of changing how social sector professionals, think, live and strategize improve are global in scope with significant global potential upside. As we make these strategic, tactical and mindset shifts we also become happier and more satisfied. Tranquility will lead to better outcomes for you and the people you serve.
